Christian Siriano helped kick off the first night of New York Fashion Week on Thursday, Feb. 6 at Spring Studios with playful and youthful looks featuring glitter fringe, hot pink metallics and a showstopping structured hat and gown modeled by Coco Rocha.

“For Fall 2020 this season I let my imagination run wild. I was first inspired by the film “Birds of Prey” where I took ideas of Harley Quinn running through a dark abandoned carnival fun house. This led to a mythical, gothic and artistic experimental collection. I even found myself looking to the Dadaism art movement of the early 20th century for ideas of sculpture, form, futurism and expression,” Siriano wrote in his show notes.

But anyone whose watched an episode of “Project Runway” knows that the final looks aren’t complete without hair and makeup. In The Know went backstage at Christian Siriano’s Fall 2020 show to see global makeup artist Erin Parsons and celebrity hair stylist Justine Marjan work their magic on the models.

The makeup

Parsons, working with Maybelline, gave the models a dark smoky eye with a hot pink lip and a black rhinestone heart accent on the cheek. (E-girls, this one’s for you!)

To create the look, the makeup team started with Maybelline Fit Me Dewy + Smooth Foundation, Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer and Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Pressed Powder to smooth, tone and prep models’ faces. It’s good to note that all of these products serve a wide range of skin tones — the foundation comes in 25 shades — so most people won’t have trouble finding their color match.

The team then applied Maybelline Cheek Heat Sheer Gel-Cream Blush in Berry Flame to give cheeks some color, and they filled in brows (only where necessary, really) using Maybelline Brow Ultra Slim Defining Eyebrow Pencil. Brows were then styled with Maybelline Brow Fast Sculpt Gel Mascara.

Makeup artists lined models eyes with Maybelline TattooStudio Sharpenable Gel Pencil Longwear Eyeliner in Deep Onyx, slightly smudging the liner for a smokier effect. Then, they applied Maybelline Falsies Lash Life Washable Mascara to elongate the lashes and really open up the eyes.

To achieve the perfect pink pout, the team used Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick in Creator and Romantic, and applied with their finger tips for a more muted style. After, they added shine with Maybelline Lifter Gloss in Ice. If you’ve never heard of the Lifter Gloss, it’s because this is the first time it’s been used! It’s formulated with hyaluronic acid and sadly, won’t hit stores until June 2020.

Finishing off each model’s look, Parsons personally swooped in with a stencil and Maybelline Hyper Easy Liquid Liner to draw a small, black heart on the left cheekbone adorned with one black rhinestone. The heart definitely played into the Harley Quinn-inspo!

All in all, using only Maybelline makeup products, the whole look was a) playful b) totally doable and c) cost around $65 in beauty products.

The hair

You guys … I was living for this hair. Justin Marjan — known for styling celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Ashley Graham, and starting the recent hair clip trend — gave models slicked back pony tails even Ariana Grande would be jealous of.

“Christian Siriano’s collection has loose Harley Quinn ties. We added pink and blue extensions to sleek ponytails so you’d see pops of color in the back and a clean finish in the front,” Marjan said.

To create the look, Marjan first used a ghd Platinum Plus Styler to straighten the hair. She then slicked the hair back with TRESemmé TRES TWO Extra Hold Gel, starting at the roots, and secured a mid pony tail with an elastic. Then, she attached extensions matching models’ natural color with pops of pink and blue extensions mixed in to the pony tail using a hidden crown clip.

Once the pony tail was set, she wrapped a piece of hair around the base of the ponytail and secured it with a bobby pin to hide the elastic and clip. We noticed that she used a little bit of the extra hold gel on the piece used for wrapping to really keep the hair smooth, and then sprayed it with TRESemmé Compressed Micro Mist Level 4: Extend Hair Spray to totally set.

Marjan then used a flat iron to smooth the length of the ponytail so it was stick straight, using TRESemmé Smooth Dry Oil Spray to smooth it out and add shine. The whole look was finished with a final mist of hair spray.

To get the look yourself, you don’t have to spend money on expensive extensions or run to the salon to get your hair colored. Nowadays there are so many temporary hair color sprays and gels. Personally, I love Eva NYC Pink Chameleon Temporary Color Spray ($4.97 at Ulta) for daily color, or Kristin Ess Rose Gold Temporary Tint ($12 at Target) for a few days of pastel pink hair.

The nails

Out of all of these beauty moments, the nails are probably the easiest to incorporate into your daily look. Models fingernails were painted with Essie’s black nail polish and adorned with silver rhinestones. You could wear this look really anywhere, but on the runway, it totally popped.
