It may still be August, but it’s Halloween for the next few months on TikTok.
TikTokers have been sharing videos of themselves hunting down the coveted “ghost rug” that everyone on the platform has been talking about. The $25 runner is 20 x 60 in. wide and black with white ghosts. It’s available at all TJX Companies subsidiaries — T.J. Maxx and Marshall’s — if you can find it. It seems to be sold out almost everywhere, thanks to TikTok’s influence.
“We are always thrilled to see our customers having fun with our ‘treasure hunt’ shopping experience and love to see the seasonal finds they are sharing!” a representative for T.J. Maxx told In The Know. “If you happen upon a ghost rug, we’d recommend grabbing it.”
One commenter summarized the craze on @mainstreetfam’s video: “Why do I suddenly feel like I need this rug when I’ve never decorated for Halloween once?”
“I NEED THIS,” another person added.
The hashtag #ghostrug has over 9 million views and counting on TikTok.
The ghost rug has become so popular, some TikTokers are even taking advantage of having extras and offering to sell it to their followers.
The rug was the brainchild of Jos Sipowicz, an in-house designer for Loloi Rugs, which works with mass retailers like HomeGoods, TJ Maxx and Marshall’s. Sipowicz herself has been documenting her struggles trying to find the ghost rug for herself too.
“The best part of what I do as a designer is seeing real people out in the world happy with their products,” Sipowicz told In The Know. “TikTok is such a cool platform to be able to organically do that!”
As of now, the ghost rug is only available in select stores. Whether or not the rug will become available online sometime in the future is not clear.
