While store-bought baby food is totally fine (and super convenient), experts have named a few downsides.

Pre-made baby food can have preservatives and because it is processed, while harmful bacteria is gone, nutrients may be reduced. Not to mention it can get pricey. Homemade baby food is more nutrient-rich and parents can control everything in it. So if your baby has allergies, it might be the way to go.

But don’t worry you don’t have to choose between pre-made or homemade, pediatric dietitian Diana Schnee at the Cleveland Clinic actually suggests a combination of both. Having homemade purees when dining in and pre-made when the family is dining out, is recommended.

This zucchini pea puree is super easy to make but the best part is you can apply this technique to all kinds of veggies like sweet potatoes, carrots and red peppers.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups frozen peas
  • 1 zucchini, chopped
  • 4 mint leaves

First, bring a pot of water to boil. Once boiled add the zucchini and peas.

Let the veggies steam for three to five minutes.

Next, strain the zucchini and peas and throw them in a blender with the mint leaves.

Blend until smooth and creamy. Make sure the puree is thoroughly blended as lumpy foods could be a choking hazard.

Now, your healthy homemade baby food puree is ready to serve. Store and freeze any leftovers. Pro-tip: To save as individual portions use a silicone ice cube tray
