Is deep-fried pizza even better than regular pizza? The question sounds insane, but a new TikTok trend has plenty of users asking that question.
It all started with the highly famous TikTok account, Trader Joe’s Food Reviews (@traderjoesfoodreviews). In a now-viral clip, the woman behind the page showed how to make a deep-fried pizza with supplies purchased solely from Trader Joe’s.

The pizza in @traderjoesfoodreviews’ video looks, admittedly, awesome. She explains that deep-frying the dough gives it a crunchy exterior and a soft, chewy center.
So we set off to the closest Trader Joe’s, grabbed some supplies and got ready to fry. To see how it went, watch the video above or keep reading below.
How to make deep-fried pizza
We followed @traderjoesfoodreviews’ recipe pretty closely here, with just a few small modifications. Here’s what you’ll need:
- One bag of raw pizza dough (small/personal-sized)
- Pizza sauce
- Fresh mozzarella
- Fresh basil leaves
- Olive oil
To start, fill a medium-sized skillet with olive oil and set the temperature to medium-high — until the oil starts to sizzle. Meanwhile, make sure your dough is stretched into a circle of about 7 or 8 inches in diameter.
Next, drop in your dough and let it soak. As soon as one side starts to turn golden brown, flip it and do the same for the other side (this should happen fairly quickly). Then remove the dough.
Set your oven to 400 degrees. While it heats up, top your fried dough with pizza sauce, mozzarella and basil — or whatever other toppings you want. Then cook the whole thing for 10 to 12 minutes until the cheese has melted to your liking. Finally, it’s time to dig in!
Is deep-fried pizza really as good as it looks?
First things first, it’s worth noting that this recipe is a little tougher than making a standard homemade pizza, let alone a frozen one. Deep-frying is messy and requires lots of care and attention, so make sure you’re being safe!
That said, the payoff here is enormous. The deep-fried pizza was a complete 5 out of 5 taste-wise. The dough was deliciously crispy on the outside and full of chewy goodness on the inside. The texture complements the flavor of the pizza toppings perfectly.
It would be unfair (maybe sacrilegious) to say this method is better than regular pizza, but … maybe it is? At the very least, it’s a recipe any pizza lover or Trader Joe’s fanatic has to try.
