Hit show ‘iCarly’ is returning in 2021 — here’s what we know

Good news: Nickelodeon’s iCarly is getting a grown-up reboot. However, you’re going to have to wait a bit for more Carly Shay. Here’s everything we know about the classic sitcom’s revival.

Where and when can I see it?

The show will will premiere on the streaming service Paramount+ (currently known as CBS All Access) in 2021.

Which stars are returning?

The show’s lead Miranda Cosgrove, along with costars Jerry Trainor and Nathan Kress, are set to reprise their roles as Carly, Spencer and Freddie, respectively.

Which stars aren’t coming back?

Noah Munck played Gibby in the original iCarly and it looks like he won’t be coming back. Munck’s recurring role on The Goldbergs may prevent him from signing on to the project for now.

However, Jay Kogen, one of the showrunners, revealed the series was in contact with Munck, so there is hope.

Carly’s best friend Sam, portrayed by Jennette McCurdy, likely won’t return either. McCurdy has been open about her negative experience during iCarly’s original run.

McCurdy has alluded to abusive and overtly inappropriate behavior at the hands of the show’s producer, Dan Schneider. Schneider was later ousted from Nickelodeon in 2018 after numerous complaints from staff.

“Following many conversations together about next directions and future opportunities, Nickelodeon and our long-time creative partner Dan Schneider/Schneider’s Bakery have agreed to not extend the current deal,” Nickelodeon and Schneider said in a joint statement in 2018.

McCurdy has also discussed how working as a child star caused her to have an eating disorder. She has since quit acting and is pursuing a career as a director.

“Despite her outside success, McCurdy felt ashamed of 90 percent of her resume and ultimately unfulfilled, so she turned to alcohol, but since that didn’t work, she quit acting and began pursuing writing/directing in 2017,” her bio states.

Nevertheless, Kogen tweeted that the door is always open for McCurdy to return.

“To us there is no replacing Jennette and we wanted to leave the possibility open that she might come back even for an episode or two,” Kogen tweeted

What is the iCarly reboot about?

There’s not a lot of information about where the show will pick up. We only know that it’s for an adult audience.

The original series followed the viral vlog of Carly, a girl whose father is a member of the U.S. Air Force and is often stationed in a submarine. The series featured guest stars like Michelle Obama, Emily Ratajkowski and Emma Stone.

In the final episode “iGoodbye,” Carly decided to move to Italy with her father Colonel Shay and end her webcast.

In 2016, Cosgrove said that if the series were rebooted she would love to know more about Carly’s mother, who was hardly mentioned in the series.

“I’d love to know what happened with Carly’s mom,” Cosgrove told HuffPost. “No one ever told me and I’m still wondering about that.”
