Two-Spirit powwow dancers Adrian Matthias Stevens (Northern Ute/Shoshone-Bannock/San Carlos Apache) and Sean Snyder (Navajo and Southern Ute) fell in love on the powwow circuit in 2013 and have been redefining Native American dance ever since. While the couple was forbidden from dancing the Sweethearts Dance (which has traditionally featured a male-female couple) at a powwow in 2017, the two have since won first place at Miss Indian World Cheyenne Kippenberger’s Sweethearts Special in Hollywood, Fla., breaking barriers for LGBTQ and Two-Spirit members of Native communities. Stevens and Snyder were also the subjects of the short film Sweetheart Dancers, which won the Grand Jury Prize for documentary short at the LGBTQ film festival Outfest LA in 2019.
