Hometown: Charlotte, North Carolina
In an era where artists may often share and repeat the same themes in their music, Charlotte-based rapper Mavi makes his message very clear. Through his lo-fi rap lyrics, the artist has taken inspiration from a range of icons — Jay Z, Damian Marley, Nas, to name a few — to galvanize his peers into fighting for Black liberation, empowering women and pushing against an unfair system. In 2019, he released his album Let the Sun Talk, which heavily touches on the Black identity and was praised by Pitchfork for being “dense and mystic.” And when he’s not making music, Mavi, whose real name is Omavi Minder, has his eyes set on another passion: studying neuroscience at Howard University.
