In The Know Honors: Shannon Lisa

Environmentalist, program director, “toxic detective”
Age: 23
Hometown: Avenel, N.J.

Shannon Lisa describes herself as: “If Nancy Drew wore a hazmat suit.” The 23-year-old has previously served as a toxic waste investigator and program director for the Edison Wetlands Association, a New Jersey-based environmental non-profit. Lisa volunteered full-time for years to investigate legacy chemical sites for possible contamination and to help communities suffering from rare illnesses believed to be caused by toxic exposures. Her work has taken her directly out into the field, where she has designed research projects and sampled lakes, rivers and other parts of the natural environment throughout the country. At age 21, Lisa was given a Brower Youth Award for her environmental work. She is currently working on launching her own organization, continuing her “toxic detective” work.
