Academy Award-winning actor Jared Leto may have just dabbled into cosplaying, but he’s not dressed up as any comic book or science-fiction character. Leto appeared as Joe Exotic in a cowboy hat and sparkling western shirt, holding a stuffed tiger, to announce he would be hosting a Twitter watch party of Netflix’s hit documentary series “Tiger King.”
“Tiger King” seems to have taken viewers by storm with the documentary ranking no. 1 on the streaming service in the U.S. for days. Perhaps social distancing measures have made the series a phenomenon (as most people are tucked away at home watching more television as a pastime), or maybe it’s because the documentary is so darn weird.
Don’t worry there’s no spoilers here, but let’s just say what starts off as a feud between two big cat lovers unravels into a soap-operatic drama featuring polygamy, cult-like personalities and lots of sequins.
Leto seems to have joined the “Tiger King” fandom. The “Suicide Squad” actor also shared a photo of him wearing a floral blouse similar to the one Carole Baskin wore. And since he’s not just a fan of the series but also of Joe Exotic’s perplexing country music career, Leto additionally shared a link of the personality’s single “I Saw A Tiger.”
“How does this only have 350k views??? For your quarantine pleasure,” Leto wrote when he shared the song.
Among the many strange and eccentric personalities in the big cat community, Joe Exotic’s Lisa Frank-western aesthetic, along with his gun-toting, libertarian persona, seem to have attracted a swath of fans, despite his many nefarious behaviors depicted in the documentary. While certain actions should not be overlooked, the general focus on the bizarre antics of the big cat community and the onslaught of internet memes is probably just a conversation-starting distraction.
