Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn have kept their relationship pretty low-key, but Swift has finally started to spill some tea on her actor beau.
She revealed in her Disney+ documentary Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions, about her critically-acclaimed surprise summer album folklore, that Alwyn was a huge part of her creative process in quarantine.
So who is Swift’s long-time boyfriend from across the pond? Here’s everything you need to know.
Who is Joe Alwyn?
Alwyn was born on Feb. 21, 1991, in London. His mother is a psychotherapist and his father is a documentary filmmaker. The 29-year-old British actor’s breakout role was in Ang Lee’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. He has also appeared in Mary Queen of Scots, The Favourite, Harriet and The Sense of an Ending.
How long have he and Taylor Swift been together?
Alwyn began dating Swift in 2016. They met at the Met Gala in May when Swift was still dating Calvin Harris (and Tom Hiddleston after him).
By October 2016, Swift had ditched Harris and Hiddleston, and was spotted with Alwyn at a Kings of Leon concert.
In May 2017, rumors circulated that Alwyn and Swift were a couple. Then in December, fans went bananas when they saw them slow dance during Ed Sheeran’s set at the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball.
Alwyn and Swift moved in together in February 2018 and started making red carpet appearances together soon after.
The pair has largely kept their relationship private, but Swift gushed about him in her 2020 documentary Taylor Swift: Miss Americana.
Following Swift’s release of folklore in August and its follow-up evermore in December, the singer opened up about their relationship more in interviews.
“I think that in knowing him and being in the relationship I am in now, I have definitely made decisions that have made my life feel more like a real-life and less like just a storyline to be commented on,” Swift told Paul McCartney during an interview for Rolling Stone. “Whether that’s deciding where to live, who to hang out with when to not take a picture. It’s really just trying to find bits of normalcy.”
What songs has Taylor Swift written about Joe Alwyn?
Swift began alluding to her relationship with Alwyn on the album Reputation. On “Delicate” she discussed meeting him when her reputation was at its worst, “Gorgeous” is about Alwyn’s good looks and “Dress” is about their secret romance.
She continued to write about Alwyn on her follow-up album Lover. The song “London Boy” documents their time visiting areas like Camden, Soho and Shoreditch, “The Archer” is about their relationship drama and “Lover” and “Cornelia Street” are more tributes to their love.
On folklore Swift penned the song “Invisible String” about how her exes eventually led her to Alwyn.
He’s credited on some of Taylor Swift’s songs as “William Bowery.”
Swift doesn’t just write songs about Alwyn she also writes with him. The actor is credited as William Bowery, a co-songwriter on “Champagne Problems,” “Coney Island” and on “Evermore.”
“I was like, ‘Hey, this could be really weird and we could hate this, [but] because we’re in quarantine and there’s nothing else going on, could we just try to see what it’s like if we write this song together?'” Swift said of writing with Alwyn.
