After the fourth season release of Stranger Things, Gen Z is obsessed with singer Kate Bush — and older generations aren’t happy.
With the return of the hit Netflix show, young fans are once again discovering key aspects of ‘80s pop culture. This time around, Gen Z has discovered the song “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush, which the show featured during a pivotal moment of the new season.
Many Gen Zs are taking to social media to express their newfound appreciation for Kate Bush’s discography.
On the other hand, older generations are predictably outraged by some of Gen Z’s language when describing their new obsession with Kate Bush.
The statements made in the previous TikTok understandably created some controversy in the comments.
“Gatekeeping a song from the ‘80s?” A TikToker commented.
“It’s great introducing an icon to a younger audience. Music is immortalized. There’s no need to gatekeep anyone from its beauty,” another TikToker chimed in.
Similarly, some members of older generations took to Twitter to express their feelings over Stranger Things making the ‘80s singer ‘mainstream.’
However, other long-time Kate Bush fans are confused about why people seem to be so furious about Gen Z discovering her music. It’s ironic to them that both sides of the timeline are attempting to gatekeep the singer when Bush was already “mainstream” at the peak of her career.
Bush released her single “Running Up That Hill” in 1985 with great success; during its initial release, the song peaked at number three on the UK singles chart and reached the Top 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. According to NBC News, the song skyrocketed to number one on iTunes this past week – all thanks to the virality of Stranger Things.
Amid all the online arguments, loyal Kate Bush fans are simply happy to see their favorite artist receiving well-deserved recognition in today’s day and age.
“Me welcoming all the new Kate Bush fans after hearing ‘Running Up That Hill’ in Stranger Things,” wrote TikTok user @emillyy.di.
“Seeing so many people trying to gatekeep here – and for what? She’s been around for so long, and I’m just happy she’s getting more exposure,” a TikToker commented.
