It’s been said that the best gifts come in small packages, which is certainly true when it comes to Korean lunch box cakes. The adorable petite cakes, also known as Korean bento cakes, make a great gift or party favor thanks to their small size and whimsical trimmings. So it’s no surprise that the popularity of these cute, handheld cakes has moved beyond Korea, becoming the latest dessert trend taking over TikTok. If you’re looking for an easy dessert that will make someone smile, here are five adorable lunch box cake recipes served with a hefty dose of charm.
1. Lunch box cherry cake
This lunch box cake with cherry embellishments is almost too cute to eat. TikToker @dearestcake begins by slathering yellow buttercream frosting on the first layer of cake. Next, they place another layer of cake on top before frosting the whole cake. After transferring the tiny cake to a square takeout box, the TikToker decorates the cake with little cherries using green and red icing.
2. Lunch box carrot cake
If you love carrot cake, then this miniature version will surely “bake” your day. First, combine flour, cinnamon, baking soda and baking powder with beaten brown sugar, oil, butter, eggs and finely shredded carrots. Next, transfer the batter to a baking sheet and pop it in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 15 minutes. After baking, cut out three circles. Then stack the cake slices on top of one another, spreading cream cheese frosting between each layer. Use a Lazy Susan or any spinning surface to frost the cake evenly. Wipe away any excess icing, and decorate the cake by piping on a cluster of little carrots.
3. Lunch box four-tier rainbow cake
This lunch box cake takes things up a notch, literally. Start by squeezing a dollop of icing onto a rotating cake turntable to fasten the first layer of cake so it doesn’t move. Next, pipe a ring of frosting around the cake’s circumference. Then fill the center with custard before topping it with another layer of cake. Repeat this process twice more, so the cake has four tiers total. Then ice the cake using the turntable so no spot is left unfrosted. Finally, decorate the cake starting from the bottom by piping frosting around its circumference in a rainbow pattern.
4. Lunch box red velvet cake
Surprise your sweetheart with a red velvet lunch box cake. First, pour red velvet cake mix onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and bake at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes. After baking, cut out circles in the sheet cake using a round cake ring, and transfer to a drying rack. Then pipe a few dollops of whipped cream frosting made from a blend of whipped cream and powdered sugar. Top the icing with another layer of cake, and pipe on several more dollops of frosting. Finally, top off the mini red velvet cakes with strawberry slices and enjoy!
5. Lunch box ube cake
This lunch box ube cake recipe is a crossover between two viral TikTok foods. Start by beating together eggs and sugar in a mixing bowl. Next, sift in flour and mix. Then combine ube extract and ube powder with warm milk and melted butter in a separate bowl. Add one to two scoops of the cake batter to the ube batter and thoroughly mix, before combining it all with the main batter. Pour the batter into a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and bake at 320 degrees Fahrenheit for about 35 to 40 minutes. To assemble the cake, pipe dollops of icing, made from a blend of cream cheese, condensed milk and ube extract, in rows on the first layer of cake. Repeat this process twice more so the cake has three layers total. Then finally top with a generous sprinkle of ube powder.
