About 95 percent of the world’s opal is located in Australia due to the continent’s unique geological formation. The formation of opal, which consists of silicon dioxide and water, can be traced back to roughly 140 million years ago, according to the International Gem Society.
Australia once had an inland sea rich with silica, otherwise known as the Great Artesian Basin. When weathering began to dissolve the silica 30 to 40 million years ago, holes in rocks collected the silica-rich water. These trapped silicates eventually formed opal as the water evaporated.
According to Koroit Opal Company, opal is associated with love, passion, desire and even eroticism. The stone is believed to intensify emotional states, release inhibitions and behave as an emotional stabilizer.
