Before there were apps and horoscope memes to obsess over, people turned to astrologers like Lisa Stardust for readings. Stardust has been an astrologer and tarot reader for 15 years. She has penned two books on understanding the zodiac and has written horoscopes for Oprah Daily, Teen Vogue and the Today Show. But considering her new age upbringing, in hindsight becoming an astrologer almost seemed inevitable to the New Yorker.
Who is Lisa Stardust?
Her great-grandmother was a tarot reader, her grandmother a magic practitioner and her father a Kabalastic healer. Stardust was raised in accordance with her zodiac sign in a new age household where astrology was celebrated. Growing up she would get astrology and tarot readings from a local occult store named Pastimes.
“My parents had my birth chart read when I was 4 years old — only to realize that they had the wrong birth time years later,” Stardust told In The Know. “Obviously, this led to an existential crisis when I discovered that I was not a Virgo rising and was born on an exact full moon.”
She became an astrologer by chance
While attending a fashion event at a clothing store, Stardust met who would eventually become her astrology mentor.
“After searching to find the career that I loved, I realized that I was developing my skills in the area that I wanted to work in the whole time — it was in my blood and DNA to be an astrologer,” she told In The Know.
Stardust practices an ancient form of astrology
Horary is a sect of astrology where astrologers answer a question by generating a horoscope for the precise moment the question was asked.
“It is like fast and hard Astrology that yields an answer for three months at a time,” Stardust told In the Know. “Practicing horary has really changed my approach to being an astrologer. Because I have to understand what the right question to ask the chart is, I have to be very present with my clients and ask them the right questions.”
She coined the term “Mercury Retroshade”
Mercury Retroshade is the two weeks before and after Mercury turns retrograde.
“The personal retrograde story begins in the pre-Retroshade phase and ends on the last day of the post-Retroshade. So, the retrograde is actually longer than we think,” Stardust told In The Know.
Stardust claimed that during this time shady and weird things may occur. But Retroshade is a time of “increased intuition” so you can always trust your gut during these strange times.
