Ever since Netflix dropped the teen thriller Outer Banks in 2020, fans have been rooting for its costars to get together.
Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline, who play John B. Routledge and Sarah Cameron, are known for their on-screen chemistry. But viewers have been wondering if the sparks have translated off-screen for Stokes and Cline. Here’s what the actors have had to say about their possible budding romance.
Cline says her chemistry with Stokes came naturally
“There were things that Chase and I specifically added to the script that felt personal,” Cline told Seventeen. “Thankfully the cast all clicked and we had such great chemistry, so we all had this friendship from the very beginning. So building on that and then projecting it on the screen felt very, very real.”
Stokes felt it was essential for the role to get close to Cline
The actor took his inspiration from other teen soaps with star-crossed lovers like Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill and The O.C.
“John B. and Sarah obviously don’t have the same upbringing. They fall in love not because of what their worlds bring, it’s about what their emotional connection is,” Stokes told Nylon. “We just really wanted to make sure that Maddie and I became good enough friends to where we knew each other and find little ticks and nuances that would make each other laugh, and make sure we translated that into the performance.”
Cline is all in for Sarah and John B.
She was quick to defend Sarah’s choices in the series in writer’s room discussions.
“There’s one part in the show when John B. tells Sarah, ‘You’re all I have.’ I told the writer that at that point John B. is also all Sarah has,” Cline told Glamour. “Her world just crumbled around her, so it’s a no-brainer that she would have gotten on that boat with him and risked everything.”
Cline and Stokes have been living together during the pandemic
In April 2020, Cline and Stokes moved in with their Outer Banks costars Rudy Pankow and Drew Starkey. The pair looked comfortable with each other during video interviews from home. Then Us Weekly reported that Stokes left a comment on a photo of Cline saying, “Heart rate… decreasing… help.”
Stokes and Cline confirm their relationship
The pair appeared as a couple again in Kygo’s music video for “Hot Stuff” featuring Donna Summer.
They won “Best Kiss”
Cline and Stokes won “Best Kiss” at the MTV Movie and TV Awards in May 2021. They recreated it on stage.
Stokes dished on his on and off-screen relationship with Cline
The actor told V Man in July they kept things professional at first but that all eventually changed.
“We didn’t really have time to even comprehend the question: Is there something here? That was all after the fact,” he said. “For season two, as soon as we get to work, we’ll support each other. We’ll be scene partners and take care of each other when it’s an emotional moment. But it doesn’t mean that if I don’t believe you, that I’m not going to call you out and she holds me to the same standard.”
Cline and Stokes set clear boundaries on set
Calling her workspace “incredibly sacred,” Cline said she had a serious discussion with Stokes about how their relationship could affect things.
“We laid the groundwork first and foremost,” Cline told The Talk in August. “I was like, ‘This is a big priority to me, and you know, from what I know based on how you work, it is for you too. But I want to make sure that we hold each other accountable and that we don’t bring anything personal that could potentially distract each other or our fellow castmates on the day.’”
