Magdaline Hurtado founded the company Hello Updo, which offers more inclusive alternatives to the average hair scrunchie. Through her brand, she has sparked conversations about textured hair and creating hair accessories in different sizes to accommodate curly-haired customers who struggle to keep their hair up with regular hair ties.
“The industry has forced those of us with textured and thicker hair patterns to be complacent with products that were not made for us,” Hurtado writes on Hello Updo’s site.
Hurtado’s mission is to encourage Black and Brown women to wear and embrace their textured hair by making everyday actions, like tying your hair up, easier. Hello Updo’s texture-inclusive silk scrunchies also come in reusable packaging, which is better for the environment.
