Man surprises waiter with $1,000 tip following Venmo challenge

A DJ gave a California waiter an unforgettable tip when he handed the latter $1,000 that had been collected via a popular Venmo challenge.

On August 10, Brian Murphy, who goes by DJ Murph, shared a TikTok in which he surprised Peter Murray, a waiter at Lucille’s Smokehouse in Concord, with the gift.

“Alright, one second. Peter, right?” Murphy asks Murray. “Alright, Peter, have you heard of the Venmo challenge?”

When Murray says no, Murphy breaks it down for him.

“I’ve asked everybody on all my social media to Venmo me at least 50 cents, right?” he said. “And we’re going to go out and tip a random server, so you just so happen to be that person, and you took care of us really well. And so we raised $1,000.”

Upon learning of the amount, Murray walks away briefly in shock. Murphy then counts out the cash in front of the waiter before handing it over.

In an interview with KPIX, Murray said he was appreciative of Murphy’s generous act.

“It’s helped a lot, now I don’t have to worry about paying rent next month, so I have that set,” the waiter told the station. “And then I can put some money aside.”

“Words can’t describe how grateful I am for what Brian, DJ Murph did for me, I’m just so grateful,” Murray added.

According to the station, Murphy also gave $400 to a host at the restaurant. In July, a TikToker similarly took part in the Venmo challenge and shared a video of herself giving a $628 tip to a waitress at Cheesecake Factory.
