YouTube channel RedGamingTech referenced the initial rumor started by a ResetEra user Potterson (thanks, GamesRadar), who claimed that Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty were getting remade for PC (the games were ported to PC but never overhauled before). Paul “CrimsonRayne” Eccleston, one of the content creators of RedGamingTech, said he had another separate source who corroborated the claim.
“This is one of those games that is coming to the PlayStation 5,” CrimsonRayne said in his video. “It’s a PS5 exclusive but it’s also being released on the PC as well … It is not a port, it is a full remake.”
As rumors go, this one is looking likely. ResetEra has been the source of several big leaks including the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake. Gematsu has also reported that the Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee has issued PC ratings for several Konami games including some Metal Gear titles.
Metal Gear Solid itself is — and it’s hard to understate this — one of the most important games of all time. When it was first released in 1998 for the original PlayStation, reviewers struggled to categorize it.
The cinematic storytelling and covert gameplay mechanics captivated players and sparked a revolution in game design. MGS had to market itself with the tagline “Tactical Espionage Action” because no game like it had existed before. It’s often cited as the game that firmly established stealth games as a genre onto their own.
If the rumor is true, it would be yet another aggressive card that Sony is playing in the upcoming console war. Now that Microsoft owns Fallout, Elder Scrolls and DOOM after the Bethesda acquisition, the stakes are higher than ever.
