The Miiriya app brings Black businesses to your fingertips

In The Know is proud to celebrate National Black Business Month. During this month, our team will highlight a wide range of Black-owned brands. We encourage you to support today and beyond.

One issue that commonly surfaces when speaking about Black-owned businesses is exactly where to find them. After all, if you are on a mission to find niche, small-owned brands, you might not have the best luck looking through roundups on huge media sites (except In The Know, of course). However, that’s why Miiriya is the solution.

What is Miiriya?

Miiriya is a Black-owned marketplace that houses Black-owned brands on its platform. The difference between Miiriya and other marketplace retailers is that Miiriya lets the shopper purchase from exclusively Black-owned businesses.

“Miiriya” means “thoughts” and “ideas” — but can also mean “philosophers” or “thinkers” — in the African language of Bambara/Dioula.

The most amazing part of Miiriya is that 100% of the earnings go straight to the vendors. This means you can trust that your money is benefiting the brand you are buying from.

The goal of Miiriya

“My goal for the site […] is to run this website in a socialistic way,” founder Lamine Loco says on the website. “There [are] absolutely no fees for vendors, and all money from the site will be seeped back into solving different issues in our community. In the future, I plan to have optional donations where the public and vendors can participate, and this website will […] fund issues we always have to beg to be solved.”

The future of Miiriya

As for the future plans of Miiriya, Loco is building up the community. “I also plan to use any funds to fund the community’s healthcare, education and more. I want to run this in a different way than other businesses, where the main goal is to make sure no one is left behind. [To] reach a point where if we see someone on the street who is struggling [or] homeless, we take them off the street, and better their lives. I’d like us to reach a point where we’d fund ourselves so we don’t have to rely on and beg outside sources that continuously give us crumbs over the span of decades. Please let someone know this app exists.”
