A group picture went very awry in Thailand.
30 Miss Thailand pageant hopefuls gathered on a small bridge a few feet above a pond on Dec. 7. It was the second day of the Miss Thailand competition and the face shield-donning beauties were posing for a photo in matching t-shirts when the bridge suddenly collapsed under their weight.
Footage uploaded to Newsflare showed the shocking moment the structure snapped. The women smiled and waved for the camera, some even holding drinks from a nearby cafe, but when they least expected it the suspension bridge, made of ropes, snapped beneath them. The 30 women then dropped into the pond’s filthy water, which fortunately wasn’t too deep.
Most of the women had a sense of humor about the incident. However, three of the girls were injured, one with cuts and bruises on her forehead and two with minor scrapes.
“Normally the contest is held in Bangkok, but this time we chose Chiang Mai and we were confident that it would be safe and secure,” Dr. Adisorn Suddee, director of the Miss Thailand 2020 event, told Newsflare. “This was the second day of the contest and it was unexpected that the bridge would break.”
Worapot Chatkanjana, the owner of the restaurant that was hosting the event next to the bridge, was embarrassed by the incident and donated 500,000 Baht ($16,500) to cover any expenses.
“I’ll also pay for the other contestants to have their dresses cleaned professionally,” Chatkanjana told Newsflare. “I don’t know why the bridge broke. It is strong, but it just could not handle the weight of the women. In the future, we will make improvements to the bridge to be even stronger.”
