In Dream Big, Live Small, we will visit tiny home-dwellers, discovering why they choose to live this way, how they manage it, and the possibilities to do things like travel, learn and grow that have resulted from downsizing so significantly. In the long run, living small is really about living big.
The tiny home movement is still here, and more and more people are choosing to downsize and call tiny houses home.
In this episode of Dream Big, Live Small, nature lovers Ben and Dylan Hahn of Billings, Montana knew the decision to downsize and live small in the great outdoors was a no-brainer.
After deciding they were spending too much on rent, the couple is now living in a 240 square-foot home from the company Eco Built, which specializes in studio modular homes.
And while most tiny homes are only eight feet wide, the Hahns’ home can actually be doubled to 16 feet long. The kitchen floor slides over the top of the living room, and the house contracts to half its size.
“We can load it on a standard flatbed trailer and move it anywhere in the country,” Ben said. “Makes it really easy to pick up and go.”
Anytime you live in a small space you have to think about storage, so the Kahns knew they would need to implement DIY shelving throughout their home.
“I was able to take an old pallet, and I cut the pallet in half and I created a shelf out of it,” Ben said. “I was able to take some old barn wood, which has some really great texture. And all I did, basically, was cut it to fit. I put some stain on it, which is just gonna preserve it. ”
Downsizing and living in a simpler way has allowed the couple to free up a bit of their discretionary income, too.
“Now that we live in a tiny house, we have a lot less stuff,” Dylan said. “Sometimes the things you own end up owning you. So we have a little extra money to go do the things we love.”
