Morrison Outdoors founder Tavis Malcolm was inspired to start the brand when he had his son Morrison in 2018. When Morrison was still a small baby, Tavis decided to take him on a camping trip over Memorial Day weekend. After a sleepless night of tossing and turning in a tent with an unhappy baby, Tavis had an epiphany.
“Everybody slept terribly,” Tavis explained. “It really got me thinking, ‘Why isn’t there a sleeping bag out there that’s designed for babies [and] that’s built like my sleeping bag?’”
“Our mission as a company is to make quality outdoor gear so that you can have a fun time enjoying the outdoors,” Tavis explained. “To be honest, when we started, we weren’t even sure other people would even really be interested, and now 3 years later we just shipped our 10,000th sleeping bag, so I think it’s something that we really touched on that people are pretty excited about.”
Morrison Outdoors produces two lines of sleeping bags. The Little Mo is designed for infants 6 to 24 months old, while the Big Mo is designed for kids ages 2 to 4. Both sleeping bags have special features that make them perfect for young kids.
The Little Mo is specifically designed with the safety of young babies in mind. “It’s a down-filled sleeping bag just like you’re used to at home,” Tavis explained. “It uses this really tight secure fuzzy collar so that young babies can’t slip inside.”
The Big Mo, meanwhile, has adjustable sleeves, making it perfect for growing kids.
Morrison Outdoors also partnered with Rerouted Co-op to create a trade-in program that allows parents to send back the Little Mo when their infant grows out of it. Parents receive cash back and a discount on the Big Mo sleeping bag, while a portion of profits from reselling the sleeping bags are donated to a non-profit called Hike It Baby.
Tavis has been overwhelmed by the positive feedback he’s received from parents about Morrison Outdoors’ sleeping bags.
“The feedback has been crazy. Five-star ratings across the board,” he said. “It’s really just inspiring hearing about the kinds of adventures that people are taking with their kids. We’re just humbled to be part of the journey for them.”
