Movies that pass the Bechdel Test to watch during Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month, which means it’s time to show women’s stories some love.

These five hits on Netflix not only amplify women’s voices in front of and behind the camera, but they also pass the Bechdel test. The test was created by cartoonist Alison Bechdel as a way to measure women’s representation in fiction.

To pass, a piece of media must do two things: There should be at least two women speaking to each other, and the conversation needs to be about something besides men. So the next time you’re watching something, ask yourself if it can check off these two requirements. You might be surprised by the results.

Five women’s stories that pass the Bechdel test on streaming:

1. Lady Bird

The Greta Gerwig-directed coming-of-age dramedy stars Saoirse Ronan as a high school senior who has a challenging relationship with her mother

2. Dolly Parton: Here I Am

This documentary follows the life and career of country singer and American icon Dolly Parton. The biographical film unfolds through interviews with friends, loved ones and the legend herself.

3. Jessica Jones

This Marvel series follows private-investigator-turned-superhero Jessica Jones as she fights to regain control of her mind from the Purple Man, her nemesis and abuser. Starting March 16, Jessica Jones will be available on Disney+.

4. Becoming

Based on the former First Lady’s best-selling memoir of the same name, Becoming is a documentary film from director Nadia Hallgren about Michelle Obama. The film follows her travels, appearances and work in the White House during her tenure.

5. RBG

“RBG” is the affectionate nickname of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She was the first Jewish woman and the second woman to serve on the high court. RBG chronicles Ginsburg’s legal legacy, from her time in college until 2018, just two years before her passing.
