The Grammy-winning rapper has always been forthcoming about his troubled childhood in Detroit and difficult mother Debbie Mathers in his music. In 2009’s “My Mom” Eminem recounted how Mathers’ substance use weighed heavily on him as a child and as an adult.
“My mom loved Valium and lots of drugs/ That’s why I am like I am ’cause I’m like her,” Eminem rapped in the chorus. “Because my mom loved Valium and lots of drugs / That’s why I’m on what I’m on ’cause I’m my mom!”
In the song, Eminem claimed Mathers would trick him into taking Valium as a kid which spawned his struggle with the substance as an adult. He also alleged that his mother would pocket the child support his father would send him.
“Child support, your father, he ain’t sent the shit / And so what if he did? It’s none of your dang business, kid!” he rapped. “My mom / There’s no one else quite like my mom / I know I should let bygones be bygones / But she’s the reason why I am high on what I’m high on.”
One TikToker related to Eminem in the worst way
“My mother grew up with Eminem’s brother. Seems she took some of his mom’s traits,” @drippingwax captioned the video. “This is not a good thing. Don’t congratulate me or whatever.”
In the clip, she solemnly lip-synced to Eminem’s “My Mom.” Little did she know she was starting a trend.
Others took the meme as a chance to celebrate their moms
“Guess who made a clone of me 17 years after I was born,” @rulaibraheem said praising her mom for giving her a little sister.
“When your mom has you at 13, so y’all can be best friends,” @lexxianaofficial said while cuddling her mom in bed.
“Who accidentally booked the same furry convention and called me confused to ask, ‘what kind of sports teams are these mascots for?'” @thewoodmother wrote in a caption.
But not everyone had such a positive relationship
“Why do you have body image problems?” @rileyshaff stated before cutting to her mom… a bonafide bodybuilder.
“Asked my mom for a tattoo at the age of seven, got a tattoo at the age of seven,” @syyddnneyyyy recounted.
Ultimately, lots of people had some very interesting things to say about their mothers.
