New York City is one of the fashion capitals of the world. That’s why people from all over travel to the city in February and September for Fashion Week, where designers like Brandon Maxwell, Anna Sui, Carolina Herrera, LaQuan Smith and more debut their upcoming season’s collection. However, the fashion continues well beyond these two weeks. Walk down any street in the city, get on the subway or walk into a restaurant, and you’re bound to see an outfit you want to copy.
However, if you don’t live in the area, but are constantly looking for inspiration, here are the top NYC fashion trends for spring. This is what the city girls are wearing. And if you really want to feel like a New Yorker, go ahead and put your own spin on each trend. Treat the world (or at least the sidewalk) like it’s your runway.
1. Oversized Blazers
These aren’t your Park Ave suit blazers. Everywhere else in NYC, the ladies are wearing oversized styles with wide-leg pants, denim skirts and shorts, and even making them feel a bit sporty with leggings and sneakers.
- Shop The Trend: SNDYS Hills Blazer, $77
- Shop The Trend: H&M Single-Breasted Jacket, $49.99
2. Sheer Tops
TikTok is all about this Intimissi sheer top, but users weren’t the first to push the trend. Make your next “going out top” a sheer one if you want to feel a little bit flirty, a little sexy and a whole lot confident.
- Shop The Trend: Miaou Power Mesh Long Sleeve Tee, $105
- Shop The Trend: Free People As Is Layering Top, $48
3. Long Coats
Long coats (also called maxi coats) are all over the streets. As temps warm up, the top style is probably the lightweight trench coat. It’s perfect for chilly and rainy spring days but also pairs well with a simple tank and jeans on a warmer day.
- Shop The Trend: Banana Republic Rio Bonded Trench Coat, $300
- Shop The Trend: MANGO Oversized Knitted Coat with Pockets, $139.99
4. Denim Maxi Skirts
Maxi skirts are making a comeback thanks to the wave of reinstated Y2K trends. However, if you’re unsure about trying one out, know that denim maxi skirts are just like regular jeans but comfier.
- Shop The Trend: Reformation Nila Long Denim Skirt, $168
- Shop The Trend: MANGO Slit Denim Skirt, $69.99
5. Quiet Luxury Handbags
Quiet luxury is essentially high-end fashion without the big, bold labels naming it as such. Right now, NYC girls are all about simple, timeless handbags that aren’t overly flashy. For example, Bottega Veneta is all over the city (its Jodie bag, pictured above, is a favorite), probably because you can tell where it’s from thanks to the signature leather weaving, but without a label.
- Shop The Trend: Bottega Veneta Teen Jodie Shoulder Bag, $3,500
- Shop The Trend: Melie Bianco Brigitte Large Satchel, $128
6. White Jeans
White jeans before Memorial Day? You bet. Don’t be afraid to pair them with leather jackets, sweaters and booties on a chilly spring day. You could also do an off-white or cream color if plain white is just too bright for you.
- Shop The Trend: Madewell Plus Stovepipe Jeans in Pure White, $128
- Shop The Trend: Abercrombie & Fitch High Rise ’90s Jeans in Cream, $90
Everyone wants to look rich, and one very easy way to do that is to give your look a hint of preppiness. Loafers, blazers and polo sweaters all fit the bill, but loafers are especially versatile. You can edge them up with a chunky sole, wear them with scrunched-down socks or pair them with a denim maxi skirt.
- Shop The Trend: Sam Edelman Laurs Platform Lug Sole Loafer, $150
- Shop The Trend: Coach Outlet Haley Loafer, $99
8. Cargo Jeans
Cargo pants are pretty hot right now, but cargo denim is especially on fire. In fact, it’s hard to find Agolde’s Copper Cargo Jeans in stock anywhere. Wear them with heels and a long coat, sneakers and a bomber jacket or a simple tank top and loafers.
- Shop The Trend: Hudson Jeans High Rise Wide Leg Cargo, $245
- Shop The Trend: Express Low Rise Washed Black Baggy Straight Cargo Jeans, $49
Trending NowThis model defines their style as fluid, groovy and preppy — their aim is to surprise the audience with an impactful and expressive outfit.
