You may have seen a few viral social media posts about Raya.
Raya is where members of the upper crust go to meet each other — in case you’re wondering why you’ve never run into Demi Lovato or Channing Tatum on Tinder. Not everyone on Raya is a Hollywood big shot, though, and some people have taken to exposing the way celebrities like Ben Affleck and Matthew Perry behave on the app.
Here’s everything you need to know about the dating app for the rich and famous.
What is Raya?
Launched in 2015, Raya is an exclusive dating app for the wealthy and famous, but joining the elite app is not as easy as just making a profile. Prospective members must apply and be selected by a committee. Only eight percent of applicants were accepted in 2018, according to the New York Times.
While some may think this all sounds vapid, Raya founder Daniel Gendelman said that wealth-flaunting and conventional attractiveness are not a requirement.
How can you join Raya?
First, you need a referral from a current member to even get your foot in the door with the process. Next, having an interesting career may get you in, if you’re not super-rich. Think creative or innovative like designer or scientist. A large social media following will give your application a boost. Finally, you’ve got to convince the committee you deserve to join by showcasing what makes you special. That means highlighting your talent and personality.
Here’s how to get off Raya’s waitlist.
Raya has about 100,000 people on its waitlist. According to Elite Dating Managers, men may be more likely to be accepted than women. Some people can spend weeks or months on the waitlist, so don’t worry.
“You can contact them about being on the waiting list, having referrals and it can move you up or get you automatically accepted,” Elite Dating Managers stated.
Which celebs are on Raya?
Lizzo, Demi Lovato, John Mayer, Channing Tatum, Sharon Stone, Cara Delevigne, Elijah Wood, Drew Barrymore, Keke Palmer, Ben Affleck and Matthew Perry are a few notable celebs on the platform. Comedian Nick Kroll met his wife, landscape artist Lily Kwong, on Raya in 2018.
Ben Affleck is called out for Raya behavior
The TikTok user @nivinejay shared a video Ben Affleck sent her on Instagram after she unmatched with him.
“Nivine, why did you unmatch me? It’s me,” Affleck said in the bizarre clip.
Matthew Perry is called out for Raya behavior
When 20-year-old Kate Haralson posted a FaceTime with 51-year-old Matthew Perry, it ended with her being kicked off of Raya. Haralson shared the video because she thought it was inappropriate for someone as old as her father to be romantically pursuing her. She has since deleted the video.
“I don’t think he minded that,” Haralson told the New York Post. “It kind of felt weird talking to someone my dad’s age and it just felt not right, especially when he knew how young I was. Honestly, it’s not really OK for these older guys to be talking to such young girls.”
Last November, Perry announced he was engaged to 29-year-old Molly Hurwitz.
