Friend gets ‘threatening’ ultimatum to attend expensive destination wedding: ‘You better come to my wedding’

One disgruntled would-be wedding guest took to Reddit to express their frustration with a bridezilla who planned a lavish destination wedding.

The Reddit user took to the platform’s “Wedding Shaming” page to vent their frustrations and seek some guidance over the situation.

Outlining the context, they explain that they were invited to a destination wedding at a place “where the rich and famous like to go.”

“The location is a 10-plus hour flight away, and with that much travel to the location, [it] would essentially be a vacation,” the author shared.

On top of the lengthy travel time, the author mentions that they also didn’t receive a plus-one for the wedding. While they understand that plus-ones aren’t a given, the bride and groom personally know their partner, whom they’ve been with for nearly a decade.

The author goes on to explain that because the couple getting married are friends of friends, they won’t know anyone else attending the wedding. Plus, the cost for them to attend the wedding alone is exorbitant.

“The main suggested hotel listed is over $1,000 a night. There [are] activities as well, and they have stay limits. The ‘cheaper’ hotels they listed aren’t much cheaper. I couldn’t find anything in the region I could afford,” the author noted.

However, the bride was less than understanding when they explained their inability to attend the wedding

“When I told the bride I wasn’t likely to attend due to the cost and was sorry and wished them a good time, she basically said, ‘Well, you have been abroad before, so you can afford this. It is affordable. You better come to my wedding.’ [She] was like almost threatening me and started asking weird questions about my financial situation,” the author shared.

Stunned by the bride’s response, the author listed the lavish expenses

“[It will] likely cost me $5,000 to [attend] the wedding with the hotels nearby, airfare, transport, food, etc., and I am not even in the wedding party. I won’t be allowed to have my partner there, too. I’ve never spent that much on something in my life. I grew up lower middle class, and this is honestly just shocking to me.”

The author closes their post with the unfortunate realization that they’re losing a friend while acknowledging that they’re afraid to officially RSVP “No.”

Reddit users quickly assured the post’s author that many other invitees are likely in the same boat.

“You will certainly not be the only person declining for financial reasons. She’s in for a reality check,” one user commented.

“You would have to pay me $5,000 to sit on a plane for 10 hours to attend a wedding,” joked one Redditor.

The resounding consensus among Redditors was that real friends don’t give ultimatums like that, and the author would be better off spending $5,000 on a trip for just them and their partner.
