Man faces crossroads over girlfriend’s $220,000 student loan debt: ‘You should end this relationship’

A man isn’t sure if he should keep seeing his girlfriend because of her finances.

His girlfriend has over $200,000 in student loan debt, but he dreams of a stable financial future. He doesn’t know if this is a dealbreaker or not and went on Reddit’s “Relationship Advice” forum for help.

“I have been in a relationship for nearly 3 years. I am 31 and my partner is 25. I have recently started to look at where things are going for us if we take the next step and I started to get a little fearful,” he explained

“I have absolutely no debt (car is paid off) and make 85k a year (medical field) with an emergency fund and about 25k in investments. I have worked extremely hard to get to the position I am in so I can eventually provide for a family and chase financial dreams like owning rental properties etc.”

Meanwhile, his girlfriend has $220,000 in student loan debt and $2,000 in credit card debt. She is currently in school and expects to make $75,000 a year and pay $2,500 a month in loans for a decade after she graduates.

“I truly love this girl,” he wrote. “She has so many qualities I never thought I would find in a partner, but this debt is something that I feel will really hinder the quality of my life due to the fact that with those monthly payments she basically wont be able to save any money at all.. for 10 years.”

People thought finances might spell the end of their relationship.

“You should end this relationship. It sounds cold-blooded, but there’s no future with this woman,” a user wrote

“Do not marry this woman. At best, live together and pretend you’re married,” another commented

“I wouldn’t continue the relationship. She is gonna be in debt most of her adult life,” a person said
