Who is Rickey Thompson? Get to know the comedian blowing up on Instagram

Rickey Thompson is an actor, comedian, model and dancer known for his light-hearted daily musings and Instagram pick-me-ups

The 24-year-old former Vine star successfully transitioned to YouTube, where he has 1.23 million subscribers, and Instagram, where he has 5.8 million followers.

In 2018, “Out Magazine” dubbed him a “joyous face among vocal, visible queer Black men.” He’s worked with major brands like Calvin Klein, Coach, Diesel, Alexander Wang and Warner Bros. and starred in three YouTube Red series.

Here’s everything you need to know about Thompson, an LGBTQIA+ social media icon, who’s always having more fun than you.

How old is Rickey Thompson?

Thompson turned 24 years old in 2020. He was born on Feb. 6, 1996, in Raleigh, N.C. In 2015, he left college to move to Los Angeles and pursue his career full-time.

A former Vine star, his popularity exploded when Kylie Jenner shared one of his videos.

In 2014, Jenner shared one of his videos and it changed his life.

“I was in class looking at my phone secretly, and I freaked out because I was getting many notifications,” Thompson told the New York Times

When Vine shut down, Thompson had 2.5 million followers.

His comedic chops and hilarious dancing style landed him more than 5 million followers on Instagram.

Thompson told The New York Times the key to his success is being relatable. His playful dance videos and rants feature him having fun in his bedroom or car. No frills, just authenticity.

“I don’t really do multiple takes. My ranting videos I can definitely do in one take and for those, there’s no plan. I turn on the camera and talk and it’s done. There you have it. Cute idea. Done,” Thompson told the New York Times

His Instagram is full of skits like him lip-syncing to Whitney Houston in a wig or hilariously encouraging people to vote

He made his runway debut for Alexander Wang in 2018.

Wang commissioned Thompson to walk the runway for his “Collection 2” fashion show during NYFW 2018. Now that’s one way to make your debut in the fashion industry.

“This is my very first runway show, I have never modeled before,” Thompson told Essence. “The experience was absolutely amazing!”
