If you’re in the market for a chic lace-up shoe, look no further than Rothy’s newest release. These eco-friendly kicks may be made of trash, but they’re pure treasure.
Sustainable shoe and bag brand Rothy’s just released The Lace Up, a chic sneaker that gives customers a more eco-friendly option to traditional lace-up sneakers. The sneaker is the first laced style Rothy’s has ever released and follows the recent launches of flip flops, sandals and bags, which broadened Rothy’s offerings.
Knit from 100 percent recycled materials, the shoes are also produced with minimal scrap waste. Even the thread used to sew together the shoes is created from repurposed plastic water bottles. The footbed of the shoe, which is made of plant-based materials, promises cloud-like comfort and support. The shoes are also completely machine washable to help banish scuffs and dirt.
The shoes retail for $165 and come in five different colors: bright white, vanilla, navy, spearmint and lilac.
The Lace Up sneaker is a game-changer for a sneaker industry that is notorious for harmful manufacturing practices. Many of the materials used to make traditional sneakers — like leather, plastic and rubber — cause stress on the environment. A 2013 MIT study found that “the typical pair of running shoes generates 30 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions” alone. According to an April 2020 NBC News article, an estimated 80 percent of all purchased sneakers will end its lifecycle in landfills. The new Rothy’s release, then, is a welcomed addition for the shoe industry, pushing toward more responsible production.
Not only is Rothy’s incredibly popular on social media, but the brand is well-loved by celebrities. Meghan Markle has worn Rothy’s time and time again, as have Mandy Moore, Busy Phillips, Jessica Biel and Katie Holmes.
With celebrity endorsements like that, you’ll be in good company when scooping up a pair of shoes from the brand. Check out the new styles below.
