Sony is giving away free downloads of Uncharted and Journey

Sony Interactive Entertainment is giving away free downloads of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey. The freebies are a part of the company’s newly launched “Play at Home” initiative designed to help both gamers and independent game studios during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

“Play at Home has two components: first, providing free games to help keep the PlayStation community entertained at home,” Sony Interactive president and CEO Jim Ryan wrote in a statement, “And finally, establishing a fund to help smaller independent game studios who may be experiencing financial difficulties continue building great experiences for all gamers.”

PlayStation users can download all three parts of Naughty Dog’s Nathan Drake Collection including: Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, all of which have been remastered for PS4.

“We can’t imagine a better time for globe-trotting adventures with Nathan Drake, an iconic cast of characters, and thrilling treasure-hunting action gameplay,” Ryan said of the Uncharted collection.

While gamers in Germany and China will be exempt from the Nathan Drake Collection, they will instead be given digital copies of 2017’s Knack 2. Players around the world will have access to Thatgamecompany’s 2012 adventure game Journey.

“The game’s life-affirming message is timeless, and perhaps more important now than ever before,” the CEO remarked about Journey.

The downloads will be available with no charge starting April 15 at 8:00 p.m. PDT until May 5 at 8:00 p.m. PDT. Sony Interactive will also invest in independent game developers from a $10 million fund it has formed, although it has not yet released its criteria for potential recipients yet.

“During these days of physical distancing, fans have turned to gaming for moments of respite and enjoyment,” said Ryan. “At Sony Interactive Entertainment, we are privileged to bring this much-needed entertainment.”
