Stay calm, but Rocket League is going free-to-play later this summer

Rocket League players, get ready: Things are about to change in a major way.

The online soccer game is getting a massive update later this summer, according to developer Psyonix. First and foremost, the game, which currently costs $19.99, is going free-to-play.

That means players will be able to access most features completely free of charge. Premium content — like many banners, wheels and items — will still be available for additional purchase.

Psyonix also announced that Rocket League is leaving Steam, and will instead be available for download in the Epic Games Store. As The Verge points out, Epic (which also makes Fortnite) purchased Psyonix last year.

Players who previously downloaded Rocket League on Steam will still have access to all future updates, Psyonix promised. Additionally, those players will receive several in-game rewards for having purchased the game before it goes free-to-play.

Cross-platform play will be seamless in the new update, and Psyonix assured players that they’ll be able to play with their friends no matter where the game was originally downloaded.

“To put it simply, wherever you play now (including Steam), you’ll still be able to play in the future,” the developer wrote in its announcement.

The in-game experience is changing, too. According to Polygon, Psyonix stated that the new update will be “the biggest one yet and will include major changes to the Tournaments and Challenge systems.”

As of now, it’s unclear exactly what those changes will look like, or when the update will arrive. Psyonix promised to provide more details in the coming weeks.
