These days, there are all kinds of meal kit options out there. From vegetarian to health-conscious to gourmet, there’s a meal kit for every type of eater. In a quest to eat a little healthier and order less pizza in the new year, I recently tried Sunbasket.

What’s Sunbasket?

Sunbasket is a dietitian-approved healthy meal service that offers a few types of meal options. You can order the traditional meal kits, which include pre-portioned ingredients with easy recipes for cooking. Or, you can choose meals from its pre-cooked Fresh & Ready section. You can reheat these meals in the oven, on the stove or in the microwave — and they actually taste amazing.

The three meals I tried

I stuck with Sunbasket’s Fresh & Ready options for this taste test, including Mojo Pork Tacos, Creamy Mushroom Penne and a Spicy Southwestern Turkey and Sweet Potato Skillet. Every dish is all organic (unless specified), comes in a compostable or recyclable baking dish and can be ready in as little as six minutes.

I’ve tried quite a few meal kits in my day, some good, some not. Sunbasket’s Fresh & Ready meals are one of my top favorites, and I’ll definitely be ordering again.

My favorite meal was the Mojo Pork Tacos. Technically, this meal is part of the standard meal kit menu. However, one of its “speedy” ones. All I had to do was heat the pre-cooked shredded pork and mix it with a sauce on the stove. Then, I built my tacos on corn tortillas with pickled onions, salsa verde and cabbage slaw.

My second favorite was the one-pan Creamy Mushroom Pasta. It’s creamy penne pasta with mushrooms, fresh spinach and sliced almonds. The instructions said you could use the microwave, but I used the oven. I folded in the fresh spinach when it was hot and ready, and dug my fork in.

The third Fresh & Ready meal I tried was the Spicy Southwestern Turkey and Sweet Potato Skillet. This meal includes ground turkey, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, black olives and jalapeños. It also comes with a lime and guacamole for serving. I thought it was delicious, but I’m not the biggest fan of sweet potatoes to start, so I might have nixed those or liked them better on the side.

Sunbasket allows you to add things to your order outside of the meals, like fresh bread, snacks, extra proteins, chocolate bars and more. I added pita bread to eat with the turkey skillet and an almond butter chocolate bar for good measure.

How much it costs

Sunbasket is not the most affordable meal kit option out there. Its standard meal kits cost $10.99 per serving, while the Fresh & Ready meals cost $8.99 per serving. First-time customers can take advantage of its new promotion of $35 off plus four free gifts (a $60 value), though.

Sunbasket has meal options for breakfast, lunch and dinner, so if you like its meals, you can eat them all day long. For now, I’ll stick with ordering dinner and keeping leftovers for lunch, with possibly a few snack orders in between.
