A woman is warning people about expired sunscreen after experiencing sun poisoning.
TikToker Morgan Vacala is sounding the alarm about the dangers of expired sunscreen. The Food and Drug Administration requires sunscreen made in the U.S. to maintain its original strength for a minimum of three years, according to the Mayo Clinic.
That means it should be good for up to three years after purchase, but note when you buy sunscreen if there isn’t an expiration date on the label. If you aren’t keeping track, you might wind up in the doctor’s office like Vacala.
“Don’t be stupid, check the expiration date on your sunscreen,” Vacala said in the caption.
She revealed her forehead was badly sunburned. It was red, scaly with scabs and even looked a bit painful.
“I’ll never forget the look on the doctor’s face,” she wrote in the video text.
The video racked up 5.4 million views on TikTok, with many relating to the hard-earned lesson.
“You just saved my family from major burns. Day 2 of vacay and just reached over to the beach bag and they’re all expired,” a user replied.
“Check expirations when buying too! I was at Target and all but one had already expired,” a person said.
“Happened to me as a child. That’s why I always buy new sunscreen every year. Ouch!” a user commented.
“I FEEL YOU. This happened to me with the same product back around 2009. My whole face had blisters with fluid under them and it took ~2 months to heal,” another wrote.
“LOL this happened to my best friend one summer before school started. She called herself leatherface,” someone added.
