Odds are that you know who Tanner Buchanan is, even if you don’t recognize his name. He currently stars as Robby Keene, the bad boy with a heart of gold, on Netflix’s hit series Cobra Kai.
Here’s everything you need to know about the 22-year-old actor, dancer and martial artist.
Tanner Buchanan grew up in Lima, Ohio.
Buchanan was born on Dec. 8, 1998, in Lima, Ohio. He became interested in tap dance at 5 years old while attending Center Stage Academy.
After he placed second in a national tap competition, he was scouted by a talent agent. His mother Marlona Buchanan then moved him to Burbank, Calif., to pursue a career in acting while attending school online.
“I was so young and I didn’t have [a real idea] of how big it actually was and what I was stepping into. I just knew I wanted to do it,” Buchanan told the Toledo Blade.
He’s known for his roles in Designated Survivor and Cobra Kai.
Buchanan’s first television role was on Modern Family, but he has since starred as Leo Kirkman alongside Kiefer Sutherland on ABC’s Designated Survivor. His breakout role was as Robby Keene on Cobra Kai, the Karate Kid reboot; the show was originally on YouTube Premium and later picked up by Netflix, where 50 million accounts watched it in its first 28 days.
“At the time, I was reoccurring on three different shows. I started booking as a series regular on Designated Survivor. That show ended and I just jumped right into Cobra Kai as a series regular,” Buchanan told the Toledo Blade of his casting on the series.
He had some experience with Taekwondo and Muay Thai before filming Cobra Kai.
When Buchanan booked his gig on Cobra Kai, he already had lots of experience with martial arts.
“I had experience with some martial arts, Muay Thai, when I was 9 or 10. Little did I know that it was going to come in handy,” he told the Toledo Blade. He also told The Wrap that he learned some Taekwondo as a kid.
Apparently, Buchanan was a couple of belts away from his black belt in Taekwondo before he quit.
“I got a couple belts away from black and then quit because I was too busy,” Buchanan told The Wrap. “Then, before I booked Cobra Kai I had been training Muay Thai for around eight months in Toronto, Canada, while I was filming Designated Survivor.”
He’s set to star in He’s All That with Addison Rae.
The young actor will star in Miramax’s gender-flipped reboot of She’s All That, aptly named He’s All That. Buchanan will take on the role of the misfit that Rachael Leigh Cook once held, while Addison Rae will reprise Freddie Prinze Jr.’s archetype as the more popular teen. The film will follow Rae, an influencer who tries to salvage her reputation by turning the school’s loser into prom king.
He appears to be dating model and actress Lizzie Broadway.
Buchanan and Broadway have mentioned each other on their social media accounts countless times since 2017. In 2019, paparazzi spotted them getting cozy at San Diego Comic-Con. The couple even has a YouTube channel together, though they haven’t updated it since 2019.
