Teen becomes first female wrestler to win state championship

A teenager rewrote history when she became the first female to win the North Carolina High School Athletic Association individual wrestling state championship, WRAL reports.

On Feb. 22, Heaven Fitch, a junior at Uwharrie Charter High School, beat Luke Wilson, of Robbinsville, for the championship in Greensboro. The two were competing in the 106-pound weight class. Fitch won with an 11-3 major decision.

“I kind of dominated the match if I’m being honest,” she said in a separate interview with WGHP.

The teenager reportedly ended the season with an impressive 54-4 record. At the conclusion of the tournament, she was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler by coaches.

“I’m just really overwhelmed … It’s like insane what I’ve done, it’s not fully sunken in yet,” she told WRAL.

In 2019, Fitch placed fourth in the same division while wrestling boys for the state championship, the station notes. She lost to Stephen Mainz, of Lejeune, in a 9-1 major decision while competing in the consolation finals.

In a 2018 interview with the Independent Tribune, the high schooler revealed that she got into wrestling after attending two of her brothers’ practices and matches.

“I nagged my parents, basically, because I wanted to do what (my brothers) did,” she recalled. “They didn’t want me to wrestle. I’m pretty sure it was because they didn’t want me to get hurt. But I would just be like, ‘Well, if they can do it, then I should be able to do it.'”
