Teen slams parents after being grounded for taking a nap: ‘Please move out’

An 18-year-old’s punishment has her rethinking the amount of free labor she is providing her parents

She went on Reddit’s “Am I the A******” forum for help. The teenager babysits her siblings six times a week while her parents work and go on dates together. But when her father grounded her for taking a nap after being run ragged, she became fed up.

“I babysit my brother and sister six times a week because my parents work a lot (mom recently got another job on top of the one she had previously) and on their one day off together they go on dates and spend the whole day out of the house,” the teenager said. “This has interfered with a lot of things that were part of my life prior to my mom taking her second job. This includes practicing with my band, which is quite problematic considering the fact that I’m the lead singer, hanging out with friends, getting a job of my own (I’m unpaid) having a social life in general and sleeping.”

The 18-year-old goes to bed at 6 a.m. and begins working for her parents from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“I go to sleep at 6 a.m., (I have insomnia but my parents refuse to hear me out and they tell me I’m faking it to make excuses) babysit from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. while doing other chores like helping the kids with school/homework, cleaning the house, making lunch and dinner for the kids. […] My dad hates when I have naps during the day but I usually nap anyway during a window of time where I know he’s too occupied to check on me. Earlier today he caught me, scolded me. […] Then grounded me. I told him if he’s not gonna let me live my own life on days where I babysit AND prohibit me from sleeping after making me raise his kids he should start paying me,” the teenager explained

Reddit users felt the teenager was being exploited.

“Please move out ASAP and tell your parents that they’re the ones that had the kids, it’s not your job to parent them,” someone wrote.

“She’s working 78 hours a week unpaid,” another commented

“You’re taking care of your siblings on top of doing housework. That would make anyone exhausted,” a person said
