There’s a reason everyone is obsessed with The Ordinary’s AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution. The powerful little product, which costs just $7.20 at Ulta, can work wonders on skin texture, help fight blemishes and even reduce wrinkles.
But, according to some TikTokers, fans of the cult-favorite product have been misusing the solution without even realizing it.

TikTok user @duhhitsemily explained in a recent post that she has seen countless social media users post photos and videos of their skincare regiments in which they use way too much of the exfoliating facial peel at a time.
As you can see in this duet of the original TikTok, the peel has a distinctly red, borderline blood-like appearance when layered on thick.
While this might make for a fun selfie, it’s completely unnecessary for the product to work and might actually cause more harm than good. Plus, it’s a complete waste of the product, which can be a Godsend when used properly!
“This is how thin it should be applied on,” @duhhitsemily (on the right in the video below) explains as she puts on a very thin layer of the solution. “You don’t need any more than that — you’re burning your skin and wasting product.”
Some TikTokers were shocked by the revelation, while others — namely, skincare experts — were frustrated.
“Yeah.. why do people overdo everything,” wrote one user. “It’s not an aesthetic it’s an ACID mask with warnings EVERYWHERE.”
“As an esthetician, thank you!!!” wrote another.
“Why are you guys putting so much on its not a mask,” noted a third.
TikTok skincare guru Hyram Yarbro even weighed in on the matter, dueting @duhhitsemily’s original video and writing, “I LOVE THIS GIRL. Thank you so much for making this video.”
Also worthy of note for those looking to try the peel is that, according to The Ordinary’s official website, you should not use the solution more than twice per week.
Wearing sunscreen is an absolute must while using the product for at least a week afterward. Users should also leave the product on for no more than 10 minutes each session (although Hyram says he only leaves it on for seven.)
