If you’ve been feeling the effects of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) — colloquially known as the “winter blues” — it might be time to invest in a therapy lamp. While these can sometimes run you up a couple of hundred bucks or so, Nordstrom Rack has placed a ton of Verilux lights, the company behind the original iconic HappyLight, on sale up to 30% off.
But what’s the deal with therapy lamps, and do they actually work to boost your mood? According to Mayo Clinic, light therapy is often used as a way to treat SAD, depression, sleep disorders and other disorders by exposure to artificial light that mimics the sun. Just set it up in your home next to you while you work, read, cook, anything really!

And before you bring it up, yes, I’ve seen the theory floating around the interweb that tanning beds can essentially do the same thing as light therapy. No, they can’t, and the UV light from tanning beds does so much damage to your skin that it puts you at higher risk for skin cancer. Got it? Good — back to light therapy!
While there’s still more rigorous research to be done on the efficacy of light therapy to treat mood disorders, a study from the National Institute of Health did conclude that the natural light simulation from therapy lamps was successful in easing symptoms of SAD and nonseasonal depression.
Every Verilux HappyLight features full-spectrum, UV-free light with clinically proven 10,000 lux (aka the measure of the intensity of light as seen by the human eyes). It’s suggested that you do light therapy for around 30 minutes per day if you want to see optimal results.
Before you start your HappyLight journey, it is important to note light therapy has been known to occasionally trigger mania in some people with bipolar disorder, so you should definitely discuss it with your doctor before plugging one in.
Curious to try one out? The Nordstrom Rack sale isn’t going to happen forever, so you gotta act fast before they sell out. Peep some more HappyLight options below.
