When my boyfriend and I got a puppy this year, everyone told us it would be hard work. However, I didn’t realize the hardest part might be keeping him entertained while I worked from home. My toy poodle has a lot of energy and loves to play with toys and puzzles. When he gets bored of those, he turns to pulling toilet paper off the roll and making a big mess. However, I recently found a mess-free chew he absolutely loves, and it keeps him busy for hours.
Native Pet Yak Chews, $14.99
Native Pet Yak Chews are a high-protein hard cheese chew made with, you probably guessed it, yak’s milk. (FYI, a yak, also known as a grunting ox, is a type of long-haired cattle native to the Himalayas. I didn’t really know what it was either.) The chews also contain cow’s milk, organic lime and a little salt.
“Starting with milk, we use salt and lime to create curds, which are then pressed, hardened, cut and smoked over a fire for 1-2 months. All Certified Organic ingredients are sourced directly from the Himalayan foothills,” the product description reads.
The chews come in four sizes from small to extra large, and you can get them online on Native Pet’s website.
My dog is about 10 pounds and he can sit with his medium chew all day and never chew the whole thing. In fact, he’s had one for weeks that he’s still chewing on. Although, I will point out that he chews things a bit gingerly. That’s probably the toy poodle in him; bigger dogs could probably eat the whole thing a bit faster.
The hardened chew doesn’t smell and it’s essentially mess-free, which is great for my floors. But even better, it’s easily digestible and won’t splinter, making it a great option for my pet, too — wins all around!
Native Pet is a wellness brand, and all of its products focus on your pet’s health. It sells probiotics and other supplements with whole foods and superfood ingredients, like pumpkin. According to the brand’s product description, its Yak Chews can provide an extra protein boost, while also keeping pups entertained. I can definitely attest to that last part.
In addition to using them at home, I love taking these with us in the car or to the airport when we travel. They are great for distracting my pup from all the new sounds and smells, so he keeps busy and stays calm on our journey. I can’t rave about these enough, and if my dog could talk, I’m sure he’d agree.
