This Father’s Day, make dad this sweet and sour bourbon cocktail

Father’s Day is right around the corner! Shopping for the man who has everything or the man who can’t figure out how to make an Amazon wishlist just got a bit easier. In The Know’s cocktail of the week is the perfect dad drink. 

Think of it is as an upgraded bourbon sour. The additional alcohol content will get dad just tipsy enough to feel as cool as Don Draper. But unlike “Mad Men’s” slick, cigar-smoking ad man, he’ll probably just want to watch “Storage Wars” reruns and eat buffalo wings. 

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces bourbon
  • 2 ounce lemon juice
  • 2 ounce simple syrup (50/50 sugar water)
  • 2 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters
  • 1-2 ounces red wine or dessert wine 
  • Lemon, for garnish
  • Ice cubes

First, combine all of the ingredients, except the wine, into a cocktail shaker with ice. Then shake until ice cold. Next, pour the mixture on the rocks in old fashion glasses.

Finally, pour the wine over the back of a spoon onto the drink. This will create a purple and orange two-tone, layered effect. Then garnish with a lemon peel. 

Now it’s time to regale dad with all your cocktail mixing knowledge. Be sure to feed him this tidbit: “The Bartender’s Guide” canonized the sour formula — spirt, sweetener and citrus — in 1862. The book made the whiskey sour a legendary staple, according to Supercall. When made with bourbon, the spirit’s sweet flavor balances the acidic lemon and blends well with the simple syrup.

In this case, adding the richness of Peychaud’s woodsy-profiled bitters and red wine just takes things up a notch.
