This homemade vegan bacon is worth trying

You don’t need to eat meat to get all the deliciousness of bacon! With more plant-based recipes being integrated into many people’s daily diets, vegan spins on the classic bacon strip are gaining popularity. Ingredients

Carrot Bacon

  • 2 medium carrots
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 ½ tbsp soy sauce
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp liquid smoke

Rice Paper Bacon

  • 3 sheets of rice paper
  • 2 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp flaky salt

Coconut Bacon

  • 2 cups large flake coconut
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ tsp liquid smoke 

Instructions

Carrot Bacon

  1. Using a peeler, peel your carrots into strips of “bacon”.
  1. Make the marinade by combining all the wet ingredients and spices into a bowl.
  1. Add the carrot slices to the marinade and let them soak for about 5 minutes. 
  1. Transfer the marinated carrot slices to a parchment paper-lined baking sheet, and brush any extra marinade on them. Bake for 12 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Rice Paper Bacon

  1. Cut the rice paper into equal “bacon” strips.
  1. Combine wet ingredients and spices into a bowl.
  1. In a bowl of water, dip the rice paper strips for 10-15 seconds.
  1. Transfer the wet rice paper strips to a parchment paper lined baking sheet, and top them with salt.
  1. Place a second wet rice paper strip on top of each initial one on the baking sheet, and brush the marinade onto both sides.
  1. Bake for 9 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. 

Coconut Bacon

  1. Make the marinade by combining the wet ingredients and spices into a bowl.
  1. Toss the coconut flakes into the marinade and combine thoroughly.
  1. Transfer the marinated coconut flakes to a parchment lined baking sheet, and cook for 5 minutes at 325 degrees Fahrenheit, then toss and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
