Vegan foodie and actress Tabitha Brown’s carrot “bacon” recipe has taken the internet by storm. With over a quarter-million views on Instagram and 2.6 million on TikTok, the carrot bacon is definitely intriguing.
“Carrot bacon for lunch! This is one of my favorite vegan bacon substitutes! Good old carrot bacon!!!” Brown wrote in the video’s caption.
Made with just carrots and spices, Brown’s recipe is supposed to mimic the taste and crunch of real bacon. First, she uses a vegetable peeler to create thin, bacon-like slices of carrot. She then marinates the carrots for two minutes in a mixture of liquid smoke, maple syrup, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper and smoked paprika. Afterwards, Brown air fries the carrot slices at 380 degrees Fahrenheit for five minutes.
“Take it out, and, baby, you got some bacon there,” she says in the video. “Let’s check the crunch. Listen real good.”
The foodie then bites into a piece of the carrot bacon, and the crunches are noticeably audible. She later walks her followers through her recipe for a carrot BLT wrap, which consists of a sun-dried tomato wrap with vegan mayo, microgreens, tomato, purple onion, dill pickle, avocado and, of course, heaps of carrot bacon.
“Honey, look at that carrot bacon,” she says humorously. “Thank the Lord for it.”
Many Instagram users chimed in that they wanted to try Brown’s recipe.
“I’ve seen a lot of things in my life, but carrot bacon I’ve never seen,” one person wrote. “I might try.”
“I don’t know if it’s the southern accent or soothing tone of voice that makes everything you say sound so believable,” another commented. “Because you sold me on that carrot bacon.”
Brown may have even converted a few omnivores with the allure of the crunchy carrot bacon.
“I think I’m about to go vegan,” one person wrote. “OMG why does this look so bomb.”
