If you’ve ever wondered how to unlock an iPhone with a mask on, don’t worry — you’re not the only one.
TikTok users have been sharing all kinds of wild iPhone hacks lately, including how to look up TikTok songs, screenshot a full webpage and organize your apps way faster. This new hack might take the cake, though.

The trick comes courtesy of user @roxanna.roxi, who explained how to modify your phone’s face ID settings so it recognizes your face with a mask. If you’re someone who likes using face ID but can’t stand having to type in your password every time you want to check your grocery list (like this writer!), then this is a pretty big deal.
“Did you know?” the TikToker captioned her clip.
As it turns out, many users did not know. Commenters called the trick “amazing” and “genius.”
“Girl you just saved my life,” one user wrote.
Other users, meanwhile, complained that the iPhone hack didn’t work for them. It’s also worth noting that Apple is currently in the process of rolling out an update that will make the process a lot easier in general — as long as you have an Apple Watch.
In the meantime, here’s the easiest way to unlock your iPhone while wearing a mask.
How to unlock an iPhone with a mask on
- Go to your setting and select “Face ID and Passcode.”
- Click “Set Up Alternate Appearance.”
- Your phone will ask you to positions your face in a frame. Do this without your mask on first.
- Then, your phone will ask you to rotate your face twice. Do this with your mask on. If done right, this should teach your phone to recognize your face with a mask on, as well as with one off.
