TikTok users are attempting to prevent the U.S. Postal Service from going out of business by encouraging people to buy stamps.
On August 17, TikTok account famous_neighbors shared a clip of two neighbors — a boy and a girl — making their way to a local post office and purchasing a set of stamps. The video is set to “Boss B*tch” by Doja Cat and is intended to motivate viewers to do the same.
The video, which has since received nearly 388,000 views, is part of a larger trend in which users across multiple social media platforms are showing their support for the Postal Service, according to NPR. Since the coronavirus outbreak took shape in the U.S., the USPS has reportedly seen mail volume decrease by as much as a third.
In fact, the Postal Service projects to lose $13 billion this fiscal year and an additional $54 billion over 10 years, the New York Times notes. The situation has become so dire that Megan J. Brennan, the postmaster general, told members of the House Oversight and Reform Committee that the Postal Service would need at least $89 billion to weather the impact of the pandemic: $25 billion of which would cover lost revenue, an extra $25 billion of which would improve aging infrastructure, $14 billion of which would pay off long-term debt tied to a retirement benefits program and another $25 billion of which would come in the form of unrestricted borrowing authority.
“At a time when America needs the Postal Service more than ever, the reason we are so needed is having a devastating effect on our business,” Brennan told the newspaper in April. “The sudden drop in mail volumes, our most profitable revenue stream, is steep and may never fully recover.”
President Trump, however, has so far resisted attempts to give in to the Postal Service’s request, instead suggesting that it could fix its own problems by increasing its rates, the Times reports.
As a result, many have hopped on platforms like TikTok and Twitter as part of a grassroots movement to keep the 49-year-old agency afloat. One of those social media users includes fashion model Gigi Hadid.
Actress Alexandra Daddario, of “Percy Jackson” fame, has also expressed her support for the Postal Service.
“Go buy some stamps!” she tweeted. “Everyone just go pick up a few! Mail a few letters! People need a nice pick me up letter right now anyway, it’s way more touching than a text.”
