TikTokers ‘run down the street’ to R&B throwback ‘Let Me Love You’

From October 2004 to the first week of 2005, R&B singer Mario lived at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his song “Let Me Love You.” His song is a throwback classic in the genre, and TikTok is making it a viral trend.

The song is about a man telling a woman that she should choose him over her current partner, hoping he’ll finally get her attention. TikTokers are using this song to get attention as well, just in a different way.

Sully (@tiktoksully) posted the first video for this trend and gave everyone else inspiration on how to use it. His initial post has over 1.8 million views, while the sound already has over 12,000 videos credited to it.

“Now I’m not [going to] be able to listen to the song without thinking of this,” said @theenadiasimone

There was a little confusion from viewers about which famous Mario was the subject of the video — as some people thought he was impersonating the video game character Mario instead of the singer.

“Not me confused thinking you meant the Italian Mario,” replied @ryandean4real.

Once that misunderstanding was resolved, other TikTokers proceeded to make their jokes.

“Last summer, I ran so fast down the street with no shoes and no socks, and it was tiny rocks everywhere on the ground, and I caught him still,” said @they.fw_leyah.

According to several videos in the trend, people aren’t only chasing after ice cream trucks.

“Me at the restaurant when the waitress goes [past] my table,” said @babydoll_x9.

This trend just started a few days ago, so as in 2004, Mario’s “Let Me Love You” may be on the top of people’s minds for a while.
