Editor’s Note: This story has been updated since its original publish on March 23 to include the latest news surrounding Ja Morant and the trending audio in the article.
A single rap lyric is stuck in TikTokers heads and they can’t stop blurting it out.
TikTokers are screaming, “It’s a parade inside my city,” which is one of the opening lines to Louisiana rapper Youngboy Never Broke Again’s (NBA Youngboy) song “Fresh Prince of Utah).
The lyric was popularized by NBA star Ja Morant, who has made a routine of yelling the phrase in postgame interviews after Memphis Grizzlies wins. TikToker @editedby.alz posted a video compilation of Morant screaming the line.
“POV: You have that one lyric stuck in your head,” he wrote in the post. His video received nearly 11 million views and over 1.6 million likes. The audio from that video has over 6,000 posts attached to it.
On top of that video going viral, another user took things a step forward to make a second trending post for this trend.
J12 (@j12.editz) is a Ja Morant fan page that regularly posts edits of the Grizzlies All-Star. J12 combined the compilation video of Morant yelling the phrase and the actual song by NBA YoungBoy.
While his video didn’t garner the same amount of views as the one from @editedby.alz, TikTokers have latched onto the audio much more.
The sound from the video has over 190,000 posts credited to it, with users taking the sound to express their elation.
In the months since this audio has gone viral, there have been several new developments with not only the sound, but also Ja Morant.
Morant was suspended by the NBA for eight games for “conduct detrimental to the league” after brandishing a gun at a nightclub on Instagram Live. Prior to his return, prominent sports personality Skip Bayless quoted the NBA Youngboy lyric on Skip and Shonnon: Undisputed, which became a trending sound on its own.
“Skip Bayless thought he was Ja Morant,” wrote @shannonsharpeparodyacc in their post that was viewed by over 7.5 million people.
With Bayless’ interpretation and the original sound trending at the same time, TikTokers couldn’t stop saying this lyric.
The Memphis Grizzlies were eliminated from the NBA playoffs on April 28th, seemingly putting Ja Morant and his team out of the spotlight and ending his postgame tradition of yelling, “It’s a parade inside my city.”
However, Morant was suspended by the Memphis Grizzlies on May 14th after a video of him again flashing a gun on Instagram Live circulated the Internet. Morant has not been charged with a crime in either situation.
With his recent suspension, Morant’s name, and his signature victory line, continue to be on the top of NBA fans’ mind as both sounds continue to be used.
