Mom uses gentler ‘time-in’ instead of ‘time-out’ when daughter acts out: ‘This is so therapeutic’

This mom doesn’t use time-outs to discipline her daughter. Instead, she has a softer approach.

TikTok mom Destini Ann is a proponent of gentle parenting. The parenting style is less about demanding what you want from children and more about nurturing those qualities instead.

When Destini Ann’s daughter wasn’t behaving appropriately, the mother shared why she felt a “time-in” was more suitable than a “time-out.”

“This is my mouth. I control my mouth. These are my hands. I control my hands. This is my body. I control my body,” the mom said

Destini Ann held her daughter in her arms. The little girl repeated each phrase after her mother.

“I don’t use time-outs. So this is an example of a time-in,” she explained. “Phee was throwing markers at her sister. But I didn’t send her away (time-out). We went away to calm down together (time-in).”

After a tranquil time-in, Destini Ann uses age-appropriate discipline like stories, songs or chants.

“Remember genuine self-soothing is developed through secure attachments and modeling, not isolation,” she said.

The parenting video was viewed over 815,000 times on TikTok. People praised the mother’s approach to discipline.

“This is so therapeutic for me. I was raised in an abusive home, and this just feels like so much healing,” a user wrote

“Using this to re-parent myself,” another said

“This is everything. We must break the toxicity we were raised under,” someone added
