While crowdsourcing isn’t new in the beauty industry, founders Patricia Santos and Brandy Hoffman are involving customers sooner in the product development process. The idea came after Santos and Hoffman saw how beauty companies conducted their product development process.
“We both agreed that a boardroom of (typically white, male) executives shouldn’t make the call on what’s trendy or what consumers want. It was a lightbulb moment of, ‘Why don’t we have them tell us what they want?’” Hoffman told Dazed Beauty. “The consumer was being brought into the process far too late and deserved a more integral, vocal role.”
Volition Beauty opens submissions to everyone. Once a pitch is accepted, the brand works with the person to develop a concept. It then goes up for voting by the Volition community. The brand produces and sells the winner at various retailers, splitting commissions with the originator. Young entrepreneurs now have a platform to explore their wildest beauty ideas, thanks to these founders and their innovative, clean skin care brand.
