Mom shares on TikTok why she’s not using a crib in her baby’s nursery

When it comes to outfitting a baby’s room, some parents are skipping the crib altogether.

Mar Trujillo Gallardo, a mom on TikTok with the username @trujillomentalhealth, posted a video of her child’s Montessori floor bed setup and is sharing what she thinks are the method’s biggest benefits.

A Montessori nursery setup, according to Montessori Rocks, uses a floor mattress instead of a crib so that children can move freely after waking up. The method, recommended only for babies 6 months and older, also includes baby-proofing the room and putting your child’s favorite books and toys on secured, accessible shelves.

Gallardo posted this video on TikTok of her child’s Montessori bedroom, highlighting the benefits of having a Montessori-inspired floor bed.

Not only is the floor mattress cheaper than a crib, according to Gallardo, but it also increases the baby’s mobility and encourages independence. Gallardo even said that her baby plays on her own before alerting her that she’s awake.

It’s important to note that even Montessori experts who support the floor bed acknowledge that this method isn’t for everyone. According to Montessori Rocks, babies that have a particularly hard time sleeping, and babies that are highly energetic, may be better suited to a traditional crib until their sleep patterns improve.

Some parents will even start out using a regular crib and then switch to a floor mattress once their child is a bit older, according to

“If your child is under the age of 2 years old, your floor bed should be a firm crib mattress per [American Academy of Pediatrics] recommendations,” pediatric sleep consultant Megan Kumpf told Montessori in Real Life.

One thing parents who adopt this method need to remember: Make sure the child’s room is 100% baby-proofed at all times. This means covering outlets, anchoring furniture such as dressers and bookshelves, and ensuring there’s nothing unsafe that the baby can reach.
